THE PROJECT:

1,000 purpose made white suitcases will traverse the world!

15 Cities in Northern Europe will be given a number of our suitcases for their citizens to collect and take over part of the journey to the USA. Each suitcase symbolising 2,400 individual journeys of the 2.4m transmigrants that made similar journeys from 1848 to 1914.

Coming together in 5 major art installations

In Amsterdam, Hull, Liverpool, New York and Chicago the 1000 suitcases come together, dropped off by each traveller, to create an art installation in each receiving city (see below). Presented against an interactive backdrop of easily accessible content provided by Professor Nicholas Evans.

Engaging real-time though Social Media.

Each suitcase has its own hashtag and number, e.g.. #ToHull0123. Which is used by the Art Carrier and public spotter to upload pictures, thoughts, movies and facts about their own journey or about the people who made the original journey. Building a growing community and content archive over the 12 months of the project. The official Sponsors get to use the # in the run-up to the year long project start date.

Ending with a final suitcase auction to raise funds.

Each city will be free to respond creatively in their own way to the project. Reflecting local interest from schools, colleges and organisations eager to play their part. A final worldwide suitcase auction from Hull in it’s UK City of Culture 2017 celebrations. Streaming live to a global audience.

AN INTERNATIONAL ARTS PROJECT SCHEDULED TO START DURING HULL’S 2017 CITY OF CULTURE CELEBRATION.
